Abstract: Experimental Testbeds for Research in Cyber-Physical Systems
Cyber-physical systems (CPS) combine hardware, software, the “human factor” and operate in physical and computer domains. Due to its complex multi-domain nature CPS feature a unique set of vulnerabilities to cyber-attacks. The long history of neglecting security aspects in CPS designs makes the situation even worse. To successfully build secure CPS the system designers must clearly understand how an attack could be mounted, what are the expected consequences of an attack, and how the attack could be prevented. Security awareness must become a part of design practices and be incorporated in the education/training of system designers and technical personnel of CPS.
In this talk I would like to introduce two testbeds that were built at Binghamton University to facilitate research and education in CPS security. The first is the flying platform simulating general purpose small scale unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The research work validated on this testbed resulted in two publications in UAV conferences. The second testbed is Industrial Control Systems testbed. It has been manufactured for our new Industrial Control Security research project.
Andrey Dolgikh is a visiting research professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Binghamton University, Binghamton NY. He has engineering degree from South Urals State University and PhD degree from Binghamton University. He is the developer of a unique interactive laboratory course providing invaluable experience in many practical aspects of cyber security. This course is adopted by Binghamton University and offered to electrical and computer engineering students specializing in computer security. Dr. Dolgikh is an author of a respectable number of publications reflecting his security research. He regularly consults PhD students. Currently the focus of Dr. Dolgikh research is the security problems of cyber-physical systems (particularly UAVs) and Industrial Control Systems.
